Biogeosciences is a relatively new section of the American Geophysical Union. Biogeoscienes was formed because of the recognized need to integrate the key role played by biology into the scientific study of the Earth and other planets. Areas emphasized in Biogeosciences include:
Biogeochemistry - the study of element cycling through the terrestrial biosphere, soils, streams, oceans and the atmosphere
Biogeophysics - the study of the interaction between the physical world and biological organisms
Planetary Ecosystems - an emerging area focused on understanding the physical constraints on the evolution of life on Earth and other planets
The goal in integrating biological sciences into AGU was to allow the AGU community to better address the interaction of humans with climate, hydrology, and ecosystems and to provide a scientific forum for the development of environmental policy in the next decades. [More]
